MAY NEWS

ACADEMICS
The last book report is due May 16th.

Science-. Students should continue to observe the moon. If students cannot see the moon (it may have set by the time they observe), they are to describe the night in their moon journal and draw what it “should” look like based on class discussions.

Students are still creating their planet Power Point presentations in the computer lab. These are to be completed by May 16th, so they can share them with the entire class.
In order to show these in the classroom, students either need to transfer their presentation onto a flash drive or email it to me at denny@lpatucson.org. If you have a flash drive for your child to use, please have them bring it on a Monday before May 16th.

Social Studies- Students experienced a story about exploring the Americas. We will begin learning about different explorers.

Math: Ratios, division, fractions, decimals, perimeter and area.
A math test was given last Friday.
Students were given the opportunity to correct errors on their test to improve their grade.

Spelling: Words with endings –le, -el, -al, and multi-syllabic words were the focus this week.

Reading: Science content reading has been a big focus this week.
Students are also in the middle of their historical fiction book.

Writing: Students are responding in writing to the literature they are reading.

Counseling: Mrs. Russell continued her lesson on career choices.

NOTES TO PARENTS:
Thank you, Thank you!!!
I appreciate all of the nice notes and special surprises many of the students brought in for teacher appreciation week. It sure made me feel special 

Communication: Don’t forget if there is a week that your child does not show you our class newsletter, you can always read it electronically at http://mrsdenny.blogspot.com

Field Day: The K-6 field day will occur Wednesday, May 18th. We need donations of water and cut up oranges. If you can send in a case of water or some bags of cut up oranges for the students, we would be grateful.
Students are allowed to wear swim suits underneath their clothing, but shirts and shorts must remain on.
Please have your child bring a towel that day as well.

Field Trip: Permission slips went home on Thursday for our bowling field trip on Friday, May 20th.. We will bowl in the morning and enjoy a pizza lunch afterwards. The cost for each student will be $7.50 which includes bus, shoes, and lunch. Many students have returned their permission slip, but not the money. Please send cash, or a check payable to “Lucky Strike Bowling.”

Report Cards: Report cards will be coming home on the last day of school. Please note that if your child has lost or damaged a book or any other classroom supply, that item will need to be paid for BEFORE his/her report card will be released. You will receive an email from me or a note informing you of any lost or damaged books/items. Thank you.

Attendance: Students were excited to see that we had perfect attendance on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week…and almost all students arrived on time on Wednesday!

CLASSROOM UPDATE APRIL 15, 2011
Well AIMS week is officially over. I am very proud of the class for taking the test seriously and putting forth their best effort. Thank you for getting your child school on time each day!

Next week we will get back to our normal academic schedule. We will resume math lessons, independent reading and filling out reading logs each evening. Spelling and vocabulary words will continue after Spring Break. Our big focus will be on social studies and science these last 5 1/2 weeks of school.

Progress Reports will be coming home next Wednesday...please remind your child to stay "on the ball" for the remaining weeks of school. We will be very busy!
Please also remind your child to dress according to the LPA dress code policy each day. Many students are coming to school without a belt, shorts that are too short, and shirts that do not fit properly. If you have questions regarding the dress code, please consult your handbook.

In Science this week, students learned about Tsunamis, the solar system and what an owl eats. Ask your child about dissecting owl pellets...it's fascinating!
We will continue learning about the solar system through the end of the year. Students will complete a final power point presentation on an assigned planet to share with the class.

Don’t forget…Spring Break is April 21-25. I wish you all a very relaxing break and look forward to getting back to 5th grade learning on Tuesday, April 26th.

Classroom News: April 8, 2011 AIMS TESTING NEXT WEEK

Academics
Reading/Writing: We continue to read short stories. Our goal this week was to “read between the lines” and make inferences.

This week in writing, students were instructed in how to improve their rough drafts. Students wrote a narrative and then applied revising and editing techniques to make their writing clear and interesting.

Next week students will begin brainstorming their own creative mixed-up animal stories.

Spelling: The spelling goal this week was to identify spelling errors. Students were tested on commonly misspelled words.
Vocabulary: Students took their vocabulary quiz last week, so new words will not be introduced until after the AIMS test.

Math:
Saxon Math concepts this week: Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, converting fractions, decimals and percents, and area and perimeter. Students also continued to learn about Euler graphs.

AIMS Prep: We have been reviewing concepts each day in preparation for the AIMS test next week.

S.S./Counseling: Mrs. Russell taught students some relaxation techniques to think about before testing next week. She then played a game with students to practice testing strategies.

Science: Next week we will begin our unit on the solar system.

PARENT NOTES

AIMS Testing: Students will take the AIMS test next week. Please make sure your child is at school every day and on time. We will begin testing first thing in the morning. In order to be successful, students need to get enough sleep during testing week, and they should eat healthy food to keep their brains fueled.
There will be no homework during testing week except for missing, late or absent make-up work.

Reminder: Students with late work must attend detention. I remind them weekly that late and missing work negatively impacts their overall grade. We should all strive to be the best we can be! Homework is due the day after it is assigned unless it is a weekly assignment or a long-term assignment. Students are still required to read each evening and fill in their reading log.

Dress Code: Students need to come to school each day in the proper attire. Some students are wearing alternative colors under their red, white or blue shirt. Only the aforementioned colors are allowed. As the year has progressed, many students have grown and hence, outgrown their uniform clothes. Please make sure your child’s shirts and shorts/pants still fit. Girls’ shirts must be long enough to be tucked in and shorts and pants need to be loose enough for the shirts to be tucked in. Boy’ shirts should not be so long that it is difficult to tuck them in.

Students have been sharing their train stories with the class, and next week they will give their oral book report to the class. Your child has been assigned a specific date to deliver his/her oral report next week.

In order to be successful, students need to get enough sleep during testing week, and they should eat healthy food to keep their brains fueled.
There will be no homework during testing week except for missing, late or absent make-up work.

Missing Book:
One of the public library books on poetry is missing. We will have to pay for it with our classroom funds 
Could you please check your child’s room to see if the book The Wishing Bone by Stephen Mitchell is possibly there? I really do not want to spend our classroom money on a lost book. Thank you!

HELLO FROM 5TH GRADE

Academics:
Reading/Writing:
Students were assessed in reading and writing this week. Their writing assessment this week was to write a persuasive letter to the principal in favor of a longer lunch break.
Students did some AIMs practice reading as well.

We continue to review prime numbers, graphing, fractions and percents. We are still reviewing math concepts in preparation for the AIMS test in April.

S.S.- Students worked on identifying information from an informational article.
With so much time devoted to science fair projects last quarter and AIMS testing preparation, we will be focusing much more on social studies in the 4th quarter. We will be studying American History beginning with exploration and colonization.

Counseling: Mrs. Russell worked with the students on their personality traits.

Notes to Parents:
Report Cards:
Report cards will come home on Wednesday. Please praise your child for a job well done in his/her areas of strength, and then ask your child what he/she could do to improve deficient subject areas.

Attendance: Please remember that class time is a valuable time for all students. You never know what a discussion might hold or what questions a fellow classmate might ask to make a lesson clearer. By missing part of a day, or a whole day, students miss valuable lesson concepts which they may need for a follow-up lesson or for a testing situation. Missing class time often makes the student feel lost and disorganized as it creates gaps in their learning. While I understand there are often extenuating circumstances, I am hoping students are on time and in their seats the entire day 

Reminder: Grade books closed on Friday in order to prepare grades for the 3rd quarter report cards. If your child has late work, those assignments must still be completed, and the missing assignment will be reflected in the 3rd quarter grades.

Can you help? We are still in desperate need of Kleenex, markers and colored pencils.

Academics:
Spelling/Vocab: Our spelling unit focused on words specific spelling rules this week. Remember: the weekly spelling list can be found on www.spellingcity.com/denny5The site provides opportunities for teaching, practice, and testing. It is a lot of fun.
Our vocabulary will focus on the scientifc method: hypothesis, variable, experiment, procedure, data, and conclusion.

Please spend some time reading, discussing and providing feedback to your child. Please read the attached letter and return the response form by next Tuesday, Jan. 18. All 1st semester portfolio work can be kept at home.

Reading: Reading of student work was a focus this week. Students did a lot of reading while creating their writing portfolios this week. Self- assessing is part of the learning process.
Students have also been integrating reading and science as they read and research about their science fair topic.
The new genre for student book reports is MYSTERIES. I have checked out books from the public library for the students to borrow. Their book report will be due Friday, Feb. 4th.

Science: We have taken the plunge into the Science Fair process. I hope that you have read the packet which was sent home this week…it has lots of important information regarding student projects and science fair procedures. Students also received a calendar with due dates which will guide their work throughout this process. The science fair is mandatory for 5th graders and will be done mostly at home. However, we will be having mini-lessons on the various parts of the scientific method which will help the students stay on track. The completed project and display board is due Fri., Feb. 18th.

Notes to Parents

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Many thanks for all of the holiday cards and gifts I received. Your thoughtfulness was truly appreciated! 

Well, we are already into our 2nd semester of school and into a working routine. We will be very busy learning and having fun doing it!

I have asked the students to start off the new year with a “bang.” On Monday we reviewed classroom rules and expectations. In order to ensure that ALL children succeed in my classroom, students were informed of some stricter consequences for disrespect, defiance, and unkindness. If any student chooses to be disrespectful to me, chooses to be defiant or chooses to be unkind to other classmates, he/she will be given one verbal warning. If that type of behavior continues after a warning, the student will not be allowed to remain in the classroom. Depending on the severity of the behavior, students will either sit in a think-time classroom to create a behavior plan, be sent to the office to sit for the remainder of the day, or possibly have to call home for a parent to pick them up. Please review this policy with your child. Thank you.
