ACADEMICS
Reading/Writing: We are finishing up our literature books and will begin poetry next week. We will be reading a lot of poetry as well as writing it.

Book Report: The book report is due on February 24th. I will need to collect the public library books soon, so please remind your child to finish their book.

Spelling: This week your child should have studied words from the spelling bee list. We will have our class spelling bee on Monday, Feb. 15. The top 3 spellers from our class will attend the school-wide spelling bee on March 2nd at 1:00 pm. Parents are welcome to attend the school-wide spelling bee.

Vocabulary: Students took their vocabulary test on Friday. Ask them to show you their test. J

Math:
Saxon Math concepts this week: 2 and 3-digit multiplication and division, averaging, adding and subtracting fractions, converting fractions to percentages, fractional word problems and mathematical vocabulary. We will continue to review math concepts in preparation for the AIMS test in April.
Reminder: Please encourage your child to correct math homework errors. Students have the opportunity to earn a ½ point for every error corrected on math homework. This is their responsibility. I do not “nag” them to turn it back in. Students know that by correcting errors, they can significantly impact their grade.

Science: Student display boards are due Wed., Feb. 17th. The projects will be judged on Friday, Feb. 19th.
If your child’s experiment gets selected to go on to the Southern Arizona Science Fair competition (Sarsef), he/she will need to write a 250 word abstract to accompany their display board. We will discuss this when the time comes.

S.S: We are beginning a unit on exploring and settling America.

Counseling: Mrs. Russell is working on the safety tips… say no, get away and tell someone are just a few she worked on this week.

PARENT NOTES:
Spelling Bee: Our school-wide spelling bee will be on March 2nd. A list of practice words and a study tip sheet have been sent home with your child.

Love of Reading Week: We begin on Monday! We will have guest readers all week…Mr. Rubasch, Ms. Theis, Ms. Price, and a special guest from KMSB (Fox). We’ll also have a pajama day, a poetry day, and other fun activities. Students should bring in their favorite book to read for Tuesday.

Progress Reports: Please remember to read, sign and return your child’s progress report. Thank you!

Student Reports: Please make sure you read & sign your child’s student report each Friday. It is due the following week. If it is not turned in by Tuesday of the following week, your child will have to serve detention until it is returned.

Bookman’s Reading Challenge:
Students should be turning in their validated reading slips when they finish a book. We are trying to help LPA earn great things for our school by participating in this 3 month reading challenge. Read, Read, Read. J

Tardies & Early Dismissal: Thank you for making the effort to have your child at school on time and for allowing him/her to remain in class until 3:15. It does make a difference in your child’s day!

Can you help? We are in desperate need of Kleenex, hand sanitizer, markers and colored pencils.
